Art Basel in Miami Beach marks the final major international fair of the calendar year. While Art Basel takes the spotlight, Miami hosts over a dozen satellite fairs, showcasing thousands of artists vying for collectors' attention. There are way too many incredible pieces to highlight, but below are some artists and works that stood out to me in Miami.
Adam Parker Smith, David, 2023 (The Hole Gallery, NY)
The artist uses classical statues as inspiration and uses a 3D program to compress each model into a compact cube. Adam then meticulously carves the sculpture out of Carrera marble blocks. These cubic pieces are a modern reinterpretation (and gorgeous distortion!) of these classic forms.
Alicia Adamerovich, Cut our ties and we will explode, 2023 (Timothy Taylor Gallery, NY)
Alicia's art, composed of unconventional shapes, is meant to serve as a visual representation of thoughts and various psychological states. The pieces are otherworldly, strange but then also strangely inviting. Her abstract works seem to be resonating, highlighted by the recent acquisition of one of her pieces by ICA Miami.
Jacob Todd Broussard, Appraisers, 2023 (Towards Gallery, Toronto)
Jacob’s art delves into mysticism and queer histories, and his exhibition pieces evoke the feel of a Southern gothic mystery. The colors are vivid and the paintings have a ton of detail. In the piece above, the title leaves room for interpretation regarding what the men are assessing. Could it be the furniture, the dead insect, the lobster claw, or something else entirely?
Masako Miki, various works, 2023 (Ryan Lee Gallery, NY)
The artist (pictured above) has crafted vibrant felted wool sculptures depicting her interpretation of shapeshifters from Japanese folklore. These mystical beings are believed to originate from forgotten household items, transforming into supernatural spirits. The pieces are whimsical and playful, but also highlight a lot of technical precision with an unorthodox medium.
Daniel Crews Chubb, Immortal XXIV, 2023 (Roberts Projects, LA)
Daniel's style revolves around portraying ancient gods and figures from mythology through a hybrid blend of abstract and figurative styles. His latest creations are being showcased by two galleries in Art Basel. I love this piece for its clear graffiti influences and really fun bursts of cerulean.
As always, reach out if you have any questions about the fair, these artists or anything related to art collecting!
That marble sculpture is stunning.
